The story of the Reverso begins back in 1931, when the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand developed a watch at the request of a British officer to protect it from damage during the team sport of polo. Most watches at that time didn't even have sapphire crystal. They were often equipped with normal window glass or plastic glass. So the glasses were much more sensitive then than they are nowadays.
It was agreed that a solution had to be found. It was not until the 1980s that the robust sapphire crystal we know today was used in larger quantities.
The solution was the Reverso. A watch with a special case design that allows the dial to be rotated and hidden to protect it from external shocks and scratches. Back then, the Reverso had to be as sturdy and robust as possible. Today, however, the brand is much more playful and scores with unique materials that are also less robust. Today, the Reverso is not only made of stainless steel, but also of gold.
